Washington D.C. - Day 1

We arrived at a Maryland campground near Washington D.C. on Monday, June 25th and have been on a whirlwind of activity ever since. There were so many places and things that we wanted to see that we returned to camp exhausted every night.

On Tuesday we started with a walk to the White House and then tackled one half of the mile long National Mall from the Smithsonian Museum of American History, World War I and II Memorials, Vietnam Wall to the Lincoln Memorial and back again.

Thomas Jefferson's Monticello

Saturday, June 23rd, Ed, Carol, Jim & I left camp for nearby Charlottesville, Va. and Thomas Jefferson's home... Monticello. I had always wanted to see it after visiting George Washington's Mount Vernon on a business trip. I wasn't disappointed.  He was an exceptional man and walking through his home and grounds confirmed that.

We weren't allowed to take photographs inside the home. Approximately,  30-40% of the furnishings were on loan and the owners would not allow photographs. All of the photos below are of the outside of the estate and the "Dependencies", explained below.

Next Stop Williamsburg, Virginia

Monday, June 18th – We said goodbye to Bob and headed north to Williamsburg, Virginia to join our friends, Ed & Carol Apfelbaum.

We arrived to weather that was reminiscent of what we experienced in New Orleans… HOT & HUMID! I can’t imagine ever getting used to this humidity.

Tuesday dawned hot & humid but we didn’t let that stop us from visiting Colonial Williamsburg and by the end of the day we all were eager to get back to something air conditioned. We only saw a portion of Williamsburg but decided we would go back another day since we had purchased tickets that allowed multiple visits.

On Wednesday Jim & I went to see the Jamestown Settlement, a reenactment of the original town and then to Historic Jamestown which is the actual town.  Very little remains above ground in Historic Jamestown but it is a very active archeology site with many relics of the settlement being discovered. Our visit didn’t last as long as I would have like but we just couldn’t stand the heat anymore.

Thursday, all four of us decided we had had enough of being in the heat and stayed in camp to do laundry and housecleaning. Later in the afternoon we all ventured out for ice cream and talked about our move to the next campground on Friday where we will be visiting Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello.
